Research Profile

Caroline Bithell is Senior Lecturer in Ethnomusicology and Arts Management at the University of Manchester and Chair of the British Forum for Ethnomusicology. With an academic background in music, social anthropology, and modern and medieval languages, she holds degrees from the universities of Oxford and Wales. Before joining the staff at Manchester in September 2005, she held a lecturing post at the University of Wales, Bangor.

My main teaching and research specialism is Ethnomusicology (the study of world music cultures from both a musicological and an anthropological perspective), with Arts Management as a second string to my bow.

While the Mediterranean island of Corsica has been the main focus of my fieldwork to date, my research projects have also taken me to Sardinia, Malta, Bosnia, the Republic of Georgia and Mali.
