Applied English Language
The Applied English Language area of study allows for the study of advanced English language alongside theoretical linguistics and the more professionally-oriented sub-pathways of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Translation Studies.
The introductory first year course-units include pre-requisites in Advanced English for Academic Purposes and Advanced Language in Use. In the second year, follow-up courses and more specialised options are offered (including British Language and Culture through Film, British Cultural Ethnography for International Students, Creative Writing for International Students and British Language and Culture through the News Media). In your final year you will study Applied Discourse Analysis and undertake a BA Dissertation in Applied English Language Studies.
In addition, students may take course units in Linguistics and English Language, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Translation Studies, all delivered by the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures.
This area of study is designed for students for whom English is a foreign language and, for entry, students must have a minimum score of 6.5 in IELTS or equivalent.
If you are a native speaker of English you should consider the Linguistics and English Language area of study offered as part of a Combined Studies course.
