Historical Studies
This area brings togethe course units with a historical bearing from five different disciplines: History, Economics, Politics, History of Science and Sociology. Students taking this area will normally enter with at least a B grade in History at A-level and will normally choose at least two of the course units delivered by History (coded HIST in the Historical Studies list).
History course units are available in Medieval, Modern and Economic History, and the emphasis of your first year choices will significantly affect the range of second and especially third year options available to you. The list of course units taught outside History invites you to explore the historical dimension of subjects mainly from the Social Sciences that may also be of interest, and which may provide the incentive for further study. Most of these course units are introductory in nature, and do not require any specific A-level qualification.
Many of the units available in first year have a follow-up in second year. In the third year there is a wide range of specialist courses available from all subjects contributing courses to this area; students who have shown a special aptitude may be permitted or encouraged to concentrate their work in one discipline which may include a supervised dissertation.
