Literary Studies and Drama
This area provides for the study of several different literatures. The main course units are from English and American Studies, but course units are also on offer from Drama, Comparative Literary Studies and Latin and Greek.
Literary Studies is a very popular option and entrants must have an A grade in English Literature at A-level. Pressure on places is felt acutely in Drama, where a limited number of places are available. If you intend to study Drama with this area of study, you should indicate this in section 3F of your UCAS form. (It should be pointed out that Drama in Combined Studies involves no practical work.)
The potential coverage of the subject in Literary Studies is very diverse, depending on your choices. There are literary course units of a conventional kind, concentrating on the literature of a particular period or nation, and also course units that study literature of a particular genre as it appears in different national literatures. American Studies offers some interdisciplinary courses in which the insights of literary criticism and of historical / sociological study are brought to bear on the culture of the United States in specific decades.
