Philosophy

Students at a lecture
Students have the opportunity to study subjects not readily available elsewhere

Admissions tutors in this area of study welcome students with any combination of A-levels, provided their grades are adequate. They look also for evidence of a capacity for abstract thought, of a wish to learn and for enthusiasm for the subject.  This might be indicated by an acquaintance either with philosophical works or with literary works that have a philosophical content, although the former will give you a better idea of what most of your studies will be like.

This area of study brings together course units from five different subjects which are either technically or generally philosophical in nature.  The central courses are those offered by Philosophy (coded PHIL), and will provide a foundation for Philosophy options in second and third year. You should note that the Logic course is a pre-requisite for several later options and you are strongly advised to include the Critical Thinking unit among your choices.

The Philosophy courses in the second year include Ethics, Philosophy of Mind, 20th Century Analytical Philosophy, Philosophy of Science, ancient philosophy and the works of specific philosophers.  In the final year there are courses on particular philosophers and also in epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of social science and jurisprudence, though not all of these are available every year.  The course units offered by Social Sciences and Religions and Theology - both very strong in Manchester - offer excellent opportunities to embark on the study of subjects not readily available elsewhere.  The range of third year options available under this area of study is very impressive; you should take advice at the beginning of your second year about pre-requisites for any third year course unit you may be keen to follow.
