Sciences and Psychology
This area of study provides the opportunity to combine the study of a science and a non-science subject at degree level.
Sciences included are: Life Sciences, Psychology, Mathematics and Earth Sciences.
As in the language area of study, only one science may be studied and course unit appearing under Sciences and Psychology are often grouped in multiples of two or three (40 or 60 credits). But there are also single units in subjects that clearly bear on science and its place within our society from sociological and political viewpoints. Of particular interest are course units in the History of Science and Medicine, a distinctive feature of Manchester's undergraduate course.
A good A-level grade is required for admission to the relevant science subject except Psychology, for which no particular A-level subject is required. However, the number of places available in Psychology is strictly limited, making admission very competitive.
The timetabling of laboratory work, where this is an integral part of the course, may present particular problems for Combined Studies students, and special care should be taken at an early stage to ensure that desired combinations will be feasible in practice.
NOTE: The psychology studied within Combined Studies is not practical and successful completion of the degree does not offer BPS accreditation.
