Mentoring students

We run a number of mentoring programmes for young people. These involve mentoring by current University students, both face-to-face and through online channels.

Gateways Mentoring Scheme

The Gateways Mentoring Scheme is targeted at young people who express an interest in, and who demonstrate the potential to succeed in higher education (HE). It aims to attract Year 10 pupils from widening participation target groups who have the desire and potential to enter a degree course.

How it works

Pupils are matched with undergraduate students from The University of Manchester who are trained to act as their mentor for two academic years. Mentors meet with their mentees on school premises, once a month by arrangement with the school.

Between meetings the secure, online mentoring portal provides the opportunity for mentors and mentees to continue discussing matters from their previous meeting, and for the mentor to continue to support pupils in their studies.

Aims

  • To raise awareness of the variety and range of HE courses available
  • To help raise aspirations to HE courses through mentoring support
  • To facilitate informed decision-making relating to education routes and careers
  • To support pupils in their study, building their confidence and nurturing their self-belief
