June 2015

New project to raise awareness of dialects

(29 May 2015)

Dr Laurel MacKenzie, Lecturer in English Linguistics, has set up an outreach programme which takes students into local schools to teach pupils about accents.

The project, which is funded by the Social Responsibility in the Curriculum competition, enables undergraduate students from the Language Variation and Change module to visit English Language classes in local schools and colleges, to teach pupils about dialect diversity, accents and identity, and language variation. The visits to the schools will also allow the undergraduate students to encourage the pupils to think about attending University. The sessions will run until the end of June 2015.
