Manchester Doctoral College awards
(11 June 2015)
Faculty of Humanities students have been extremely successful at this year’s Manchester Doctoral College (MDC) awards, as well as winning several prizes at the Postgraduate Research Summer Showcase.
The MDC Excellence Awards are the annual awards to recognise the outstanding achievements of postgraduate researchers. As part of the awards ceremony, there was also a presentation of poster, image and film prizes for the Postgraduate Summer Research Showcase.
The winner of the Postgraduate Research Student of the Year in the Faculty of Humanities was Ignacio Pecino, who studies in the Music department and the NOVARS research centre in the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures (ALC). Martin Arboleda, from the Politics department in the School of Social Sciences (SoSS), won the Best Outstanding Output Award for a student in the Faculty of Humanities. The award for Best Contribution to the PGR Environment went to fellow SoSS student, Laura Fenton, from the Sociology department.
Summer Showcase winners:
Johannes Lotze, ALC, won Best Poster in the Faculty of Humanities and a Highly Commended Award for his research film. Humanities had a clean sweep on the Image Awards: Jennifer Chow, ALC, was the overall winner, Martin Larsson, SoSS, was runner-up and Haifa Alroqi, SALC, won the People’s Choice Image Award.
Maja Zehfuss, Associate Dean for Postgraduate Research, Faculty of Humanities, said: “The winners of the MDC Excellence Awards were extremely impressive again this year. In the Humanities we had three winners, all of whom made it difficult for me to fit their achievements into the two minutes I was allowed in presenting the award. We were able to recognise outstanding publications, excellent research, which also led to a successful spinout company, and significant leadership in shaping the PGR environment.”
