Kevin Malone’s 9/11 composition recognised
(27 October 2016)
A composition by SALC’s Dr Kevin Malone, entitled Eighteen Minutes, was listed last month as one of the top 20 recommended tracks for September 2016 by Naxos, the world's largest CD label. Naxos chose Eighteen Minutes from 1.9 million tracks.
Kevin composed the track in 2002 after visiting Ground Zero and meeting with officials of the 9/11 Commission. It is a concerto for two double bass soloists and string orchestra. The double basses play at a rock-n-roll tempo after ‘witnessing’ the first World Trade Center plane crash on 11 September 2001, until they realise the implications of the event, after which they lament.
