Have you completed the Phishing training?

(7 July 2017)

Ransomware has been big news in recent weeks. The attack which affected the NHS was widely publicised, and University College London also reported in the Guardian that they had to deal with the aftermath.

To help ensure we can stay safe, please take the online training if you haven’t done so already.

In the meantime, here are a few headline tips to stay safe.

  • Malicious software can be installed on your computer just by clicking on the link – think before you click!
  • Hover but don’t click on a URL and be especially careful when using a smart phone.
  • One way to spot a suspicious web page link is by looking at the part of the URL after :// and before the first /. A phisher may try to trick you into thinking it is a legitimate URL by including some University details. For example, this is fake: -http://www.manchester.ac.uk.paste_bin.com/
  • Don’t always believe that the person named in the from box actually sent the message - it’s quite easy to fake an email address

This training applies both to your University email account and your personal one, so make sure you’re aware of the risks and stay safe over the summer break.
