Exhibition developed by SoSS colleagues nominated for award
(18 January 2018)
The Shirley Baker exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery last year, led by Professor Penny Tinkler, School of Social Sciences (SoSS), has been nominated for a Manchester Evening News CityLife Award for the best arts exhibition or event.
The exhibition showcased Shirley Baker’s pioneering street photography of Manchester and Salford from the 1960s to 1980s. Her photos showed the urban clearances as whole streets were demolished and residents moved into new tower blocks, and she also showed everyday life on the street, with neighbours chatting and children playing.
Professor Penny Tinkler and Laura Fenton interviewed people who lived in the streets photographed by Baker at the time, collecting the stories behind the photos.
Penny said: “Collecting these life stories is a way of helping people better understand the lives of the people in Baker’s photos, and of making the histories of people from disadvantaged communities more visible. The stories people told us were fascinating, funny, moving and sometimes startling, judged by today’s standards.”
The annual awards celebrate the best of Manchester’s diverse cultural mix - and all the winners will be decided by a public vote.
- The public vote for the awards closes at midnight on Wednesday, 24 January 2018.
