Assessing your development needs
70 hours training
There is no minimum hourly requirement for the professional development of early career researchers in Humanities at the University of Manchester. Researchers are encouraged to regularly review their professional development needs, using the interactive Researcher Development Framework tool and to discuss their training and development needs in consultation with their supervisor(s) during regular review meetings.
Professional development takes place in a variety of forms. Researcher development activities can include (but are not limited to) attendance and participation in workshops provided by methods@manchester, artsmethods@manchester and the Researcher Development Programme, self-directed reading, discussion with peers, attendance and participation at conferences, supervision meetings, review panels, participation in reading groups, participation in researcher-led initiatives and self-reflection.

Professional Etiquette
Courses are booked through eProg, via the PGR Development Calendar, which lists courses for the current semester.
It should be noted that in planning their training programme, research students are expected to identify courses which will be most appropriate for their personal training needs and to manage their own diary in an efficient and professional manner. In making a booking participants are:
- Committing themselves to attend the course or workshop for its full duration
- Agreeing to arrive on time for the course
- Indicating that they will participate in activities taking place as part of the course
- Agreeing to undertake any pre-requisite activities as requested
If you are unable to attend a course please cancel through eProg asap or email: humanities-training@manchester.ac.uk to request a cancellation.
The majority of our workshops have waiting lists, therefore those who book on to a workshop but fail to attend are denying others a place. Therefore from November 2011 the Faculty has implemented a new policy - we will be contacting supervisors directly to inform them of those research students who have booked to attend a workshop but fail to turn up and neglect to cancel their place. If you attend a workshop, please ensure to sign the register.
