The current global recession presents advanced nations with a range of pressing social and political problems.
Our workshop will examine the challenges posed by economic hard times including coping with immigration and immigrant integration, social and economic inequality and insecurity, and political polarization. We will bring together students from diverse disciplinary backgrounds with faculty from Harvard University and the University of Manchester as well as other leading experts in academia and government to discuss the unfolding consequences of global recession in Britain, the United States, and beyond.

The workshop is open to graduate students in the social sciences at British or American universities who are working on or planning to work on topics related to our theme. (Normally, participating graduate students have completed at least one year of a PhD program). Approximately 20 graduate students will be accepted. The workshop is co-directed by Professor Robert Putnam (Government Department and John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University and University of Manchester), Professor Mary Waters (Harvard University) and Professor Ed Fieldhouse (Institute for Social Change, University of Manchester). Approximately 20 expert faculty and policy makers will present cutting edge work and lead discussions. Students will also make presentations on their own research and receive feedback from faculty and student participants. Speakers in previous years (other than the organizers) have included: George Akerlof, Morris Fiorina, Richard Freeman, Anthony Heath, Jennifer Hochschild, Doug Massey, Sara McLanahan, Rob Sampson, and Bruce Western, to name just a few.

It is with the generous financial support of David Buckley, MD of Morgan Stanley, a Manchester graduate that the Manchester Graduate Summer Workshops can take place.

David Buckley joined Morgan Stanley in January 2010 as a Managing Director and the International Treasurer. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, David was a Managing Director and the European head of the Global Banking Group at Goldman Sachs. After graduating, David started his career as a marketing manager with the Plessey Company plc and Coopers & Lybrand. During his time with Goldman Sachs, David became involved with the Careers Service at Manchester, offering advice to students. He is one of the key advisors on the development of the University's Manchester Leadership Programme, where he delivers a session on business ethics.

David was awarded the University's Outstanding Alumni award in 2005, and chairs the University of Manchester's London Leadership Network. He is a member of the University of Manchester's Global Leadership board. In 2008 he was invited to become a Fellow of the Institute of Directors.
