Harvard-Manchester Social Change Exchange Programme

Social Change: a joint project of Harvard & Manchester: Exchange programme for Faculty, researchers and Graduate students.

Applications are invited from graduate students, post-doctoral researchers and academic staff of Harvard and Manchester for funds to support research visits between the two universities.

The programme of exchange is linked to "Social Change: a Harvard — Manchester initiative"(SCHMI) directed by Professor Robert Putnam. As well as the exchange programme, the collaboration includes a series of collaborative research projects and summer schools. Our research focuses on what drives social change, how it relates to the well being of members of society and the implications for policy makers — issues that confront political leaders on both sides of the Atlantic. Research projects include a series of transatlantic comparative studies on topics such as social inequality, immigration, religion, the changing workplace and civic engagement.

Information for applicants outlining who is eligible to apply is available here

Applicants should submit a short statement of purpose for their visit on no more than one page and complete an application form. The statement should include the key objectives planned for the visit, this may include initiation or completion of a research project, development of a grant or funding proposal, initiation of completion of particular piece of work (e.g. article, book chapter). The statement should also outline any research dissemination/networking activities planned or anticipated to occur during the visit. The total cost of the visit will not normally exceed $20,000 (£10,000).

Applicants should supply up to two academic references as part of their proposal; for PhD students this should include their main supervisor. Referees should focus their evaluations on the merits of the proposed project, the likely benefit for the applicant and significance of the outputs specified from the period of study.

Applications will be considered quarterly with submission deadlines as follows:

  • 1st October
  • 1st January
  • 1st April
  • 1st July

Decisions over funding will be made by the SCHMI advisory board. It is normally expected that applicants will receive notification within 6 weeks of the deadline following their application.
