Visiting Academics/Students to The Institute for Social Change

ISC Application Process

All those interested in coming to the ISC as a visiting academic should complete a short statement of intent regarding their visit that clearly states:

  1. The objectives and expectations of the person seeking a placement:

    1. What is the length of the proposed placement?  Approximate start and end dates.
    2. With whom on the Institute's staff do they hope to work, and how much interaction would be involved?
    3. Whether they like to attend any classes and if so which ones?
    4. Whether there are other people outside the Institute/University they wish to meet with?

The outcomes/benefits to the ISC and the visitor:

    1. How will the proposed placement be of benefit for the applicant, the Institute, and individual staff members, i.e., are they part of an ongoing research network?; What are the possibilities for future collaboration on grant applications? Will the placement lead to new links that could be developed through such arrangements?
    2. Can the visitor give a seminar during the course of their stay?; A short abstract and provisional title would be useful.
    3. Will the visitor available to attend research seminars by staff, students and visiting speakers?
    4. The visitor, where appropriate will be expected to make reference to assistance/support provided by the Institute and the University of Manchester for any work produced during the course of the visiting position

In addition, a short curriculum vitae should be attached indicating current position, previous visiting positions, and publications relevant to departmental interests.

Applicants should also complete this form and submit it to the ISC, Director of Research, Professor Rachel Gibson at rachel.gibson@manchester.ac.uk

It should be noted that visitors may be required to make a contribution to costs associated with their stay, based on its duration and the resources and equipment required for them to complete their work.

Upon being sent the request for a statement of intent, the applicant should be informed that the Institute will normally try to make a decision within six weeks of receipt of the statement.

Approval procedure

  1. The statement of intent by the proposed visitor should be forwarded to the Director of the ISC and director of research for consideration by the Research Committee.
  2. The visitor statement of intent is accompanied by a supporting statement (where relevant) from a member of staff.
  3. If a decision cannot be made within six weeks by the Research Committee, the Director of the ISC and DoR will take a decision and report back to the Research Committee

If approval is given, then ordinarily a member of staff will be appointed as the ‘principal host’ to the visitor. This will usually be the initial recipient of the enquiry. Where the initial recipient is unwilling to fill this role or unable to do so, or the person is unknown to the Department, this role can be filled in consultation with an alternative/appropriate member of staff.
