Current Research Projects

The Politics of Competence: Longitudinal and Comparative Analysis

The project will involve the collation of data over policy issues and spanning several decades, the estimation of valence indices in four countries (the UK, the U.S.A., Canada and Australia), initial analysis of these data, the sharing and dissemination of the indices with researchers and other beneficiaries, and the dissemination of preliminary findings in draft research papers and other research outputs. It will provide comparative measures over long time periods where none exist, to date.

Immigration Attitudes

The key feature of our proposal is a module of 20 questions in the British Social Attitudes (BSA) surveys for 2011 and 2013.

The impact of foreign birth and ethnic difference on welfare state support: an experimental study

This project proposes to utilise survey experiments to test whether British citizens are more reluctant to provide welfare state benefits to those who are ethnically or racially different to them.

Socio-Economic Foundations of Generosity in Britain

This project will conduct a systematic analysis of generosity in contemporary Britain using the most authoritative data sets in Britain, The Citizenship Survey (2001 – 2010).

The Social Complexity of Immigration and Diversity (SCID)

This project will integrate social science and complexity science, in order to gain new understanding of interdependent social issues.

The Internet, Electoral Politics and Citizen Participation in Global Perspective

This project examines how new media are affecting political participation and campaigning in elections worldwide with particular reference to UK and Australian parliamentary elections (2010) and French and U.S. presidential elections (2012).

British Election Study Ethnic Minority Survey

This project will conduct an ethnic minority survey immediately after the next General Election in order to provide, for the first time since 1997 (when an ethnic minority BES survey was last conducted), an accurate mapping of the political orientations and behaviour of Britain's major ethnic minority groups.
