The Summer Workshop on Immigration and Social Change in Britain and the U.S. ran from June 9-20 June, 2008 and was held at the Best Western Moorside Grange Hotel, Higher Disley, UK.
It brought together faculty from Harvard University and the University of Manchester as well as other leading experts in academia and government to discuss the political, social and economic incorporation of immigrants and their children, the effects of immigration on race relations, social stratification, and civil society and the role of government in managing immigration policy and social integration at a local and national level.
The workshop is co-directed by Professor Robert Putnam (Government Department and Kennedy School of Government, Harvard), Professor Mary Waters (Sociology Department, Harvard), and Professor Ed Fieldhouse, (Social and Political Science, Manchester). Confirmed speakers included Professor Ceri Peach, Professor Anthony Heath, Professor James Nazroo & Professor Robert Sampson.
In this two week workshop for faculty and graduate students we examined three major questions. How have immigrants and the second generation been incorporated in Britain and the US ? How has immigration affected these receiving societies? And, how can comparative research between Great Britain and the U.S. and contrasts with other Western European countries help us to understand these societal transformations?
The Summer Workshop also included a 2 day conference with members of CIFAR, (The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research) who incubate ideas that revolutionise the international research community and change the lives of people all over the world. This program, led by economists John Helliwell and George Akerlof, is interested in measuring and understanding well being and together we will explore how to think about immigration and well being.
