
The Social and Economic Foundations of Ethnic Minority Political Representation

The opening seminar of the ESRC series ‘ The Political Representation of Ethnic Minorities in the UK in Comparative Perspective’ will provide an overview of the barriers to ethnic minority representation in Britain and look at the historical development of representation.
The seminar will examine the social and economic foundations of ethnic minority political representation, and will pay particular attention to patterns of residential segregation, levels of social cohesion, civic engagement and intercultural interaction, and the degree of economic integration of immigrants and minorities.
The main purpose is to provide an insight into the social and economic conditions that affect ethnic and migrant minorities’ capacity to gain political representation.
