Getting Started

Library Induction

Most programmes will arrange for you to have a library induction session with your Subject Specialist librarian. Do take advantage of this opportunity - there are so many ways in which the library will be of use to you as a student, and induction will give you an insight into this.

Your University ID card

Your University ID card is your Library Card. You need it to:

  • get into libraries
  • borrow, reserve or renew books
  • use photocopying and self-issue machines
  • make Inter-library Loan requests
  • carry out many other Library transactions.

If you lose your card, let us know, then go to the Student Services Centre to get a replacement.

What’s available in the library?

With more than 4 million printed books and manuscripts, over 41,000 electronic journals and 500,000 electronic books, as well as several hundred databases, the John Rylands University Library (JRUL) is one of the best-resourced academic libraries in the country.

These pages aim to give you an overview of the library and how to use it as a student at Manchester. There is a wealth of information available to you on the JRUL website, and staff in the library will be happy to help you with your searches and queries.
