Statistics

statistics

Statistics may be described as:

  • exploring, analysing and summarising data;
  • designing or choosing appropriate ways of collecting data and extracting information from them;
  • communicating that information

Statistics also involves "constructing and testing models for describing chance phenomena" (Chambers English Dictionary).

TheLearnHigher Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning has collated excellent online resources to support students' learning development in 20 areas, including numeracy, maths and statistics.

Statsoft is an electronic statistics textbook which covers a wide range of statistical topics, particularly application of statistics. The material covered is ideal for both undergraduates and postgraduate students.

Hyperstat is a similar resource which covers a range of topics, including, probability, confidence interval and hypothesis testing.

Information about presenting data (for example, pie charts and bar charts, histograms and scatterplots) is covered in our page on Data-Handling.
