Backing up your work
You must ensure that you type and print your written work in good time. Computer system failures, including failure of the network or printing facilities at the deadline are not normally acceptable excuses for a late submission.
You should therefore be particularly careful to ensure that your electronic work is regularly backed-up.
Bear in mind that USB drives, memory sticks and pen drives may be easily mislaid or erased. If you are constantly editing a single large document such as a dissertation it is usually better to store each chapter as a separate file.
It is a good idea to make sure that you keep your work on your P: drive or on the hard disk of your own computer, but that you back it up to a freshly formatted USB drive/memory stick/pen drive whenever you have done more work than you can afford to lose.
Ideally you should keep copies of your electronic work in three places:
- on your P: drive
- copied to a USB drive or writeable CD and
- on another personal computer you have access to
Make sure that you synchronise these to ensure that you never overwrite the latest copy with an earlier copy of your work.
