Using technology to support personalised learning

Examples of this Service:

We can help you develop appropriate blended learning models to support the delivery of personalised learning.

You can use technologies to support personalised learning and communication in hundreds of ways. These can increase student attainment and aid retention and satisfaction, for example:

  • Deliver timely, meaningful, effective and richer feedback in a variety of forms, e.g. text, audio.
  • Support feedback and assessment to large groups
  • Develop preparatory activities using the discussion board to support students preparing for lecture and seminars
  • Promote communication and facilitate peer support
  • Share, collate and generate knowledge through the use of the wiki tools
  • Aid reflection through the use of blogs
  • Use video and audio to provide a broader and richer learning experience and support different learning styles

Please note this is not an exhaustive list!

We can help you develop appropriate blended learning models to support the delivery of personalised learning.

We work with you to use a variety of approaches and technologies which can increase student choice, increase interaction between peers, tutors and the course material, and support different learning styles. This could include delivering personalised learning through:

  • Course structure and delivery
  • Assessment and feedback
  • Interaction between students
  • Interaction with staff
  • Peer support
  • Personal development
  • Course and programme administration
  • Personal settings

Time commitment of both the eLearning team and the academic colleague will vary enormously.

For example

  • 1 hour to meet with us  to review and discuss you course, or
  • 2-3 hours with us to for example introduce you to the University wiki, demonstrate some good examples of how it is currently being used, help you set up a wiki for your course and support you reviewing its effectiveness, or
  • 2-3 days over a semester to for example work with us to introduce formative assessment and quick knowledge checks to ensure students come prepared for lectures and are consolidating their knowledge week by week, or
  • 2-3 days over a semester to work with us to plan and implement a substantial project involving
    • Working with us to review the learning design of your course and develop online activities using audio and the discussion board
    • To discuss requirements, plan and provide feedback for the development of a video resource. (We can produce this for you but will need your input.)
    • To discuss requirements, plan and provide feedback for the development of a bespoke application to aid feedback

Please note these are just examples; we will work closely with you to develop a project where you are clear what support the eLearning team will provide and what your time commitment is.

All you need to do to request some support is to contact the eLearning team by emailing elearning@manchester.ac.uk. Please give us as much information as possible about what you want to do, which courses you are working on and which  students you are supporting.
