The University of Manchester Gateway Programme

Our Gateway Programme provides an opportunity for Year 7-11 learners within Greater Manchester to participate in a coherent and progressive series of academic enrichment and Higher Education awareness activities.

The Gateway Programme aims to:

  • Raise awareness of HE teaching, studying and living environments
  • Broaden learners' horizons with regards to HE and the range of HE institutions
  • Raise awareness of the variety of subject disciplines available in HE
  • Introduce learners to real students to build up a true vision of what student life is like
  • Develop skills in team-working, independent enquiry, self-management, reflective learning, effective participation and creative thinking
  • Provide information and advice to enable informed decision-making about GCSE and post-16 choices
  • Provide up-to-date careers information and show the value attached to degrees by employers

Campus visits

Schools are invited to select 15 students per year group to attend campus visits on our campus. Campus visits consist of both HE awareness-raising activities and subject workshops and tasters representing Humanities; Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM); and Medical, Human and Life Sciences.

This programme aims to engage with learners who have the potential to exceed 5 A*- Cs at GCSE and:

  • Have little or no family history of Higher Education
  • Have a disability
  • Have experience of Local Authority Care or foster care

The Gateways Programme is delivered by the central Undergraduate Recruitment and Widening Participation Team. Academics and postgraduate students from the Faculty of Humanities are heavily involved in delivering the Humanities-related content of this programme.
