Education is freedom: Eva Niesten
Senior Lecturer in Innovation, Strategy and Entrepreneurship, Alliance Manchester Business School
Seeing the real-world impact of her efforts is the force that keeps the turbines of Eva Niesten’s research turning, and the elements that the weather threw at her at her photoshoot location of a wind farm in the floodplain of the Mersey served as a metaphor for her life’s work.
With sustainability at the top of the agenda for business, Eva’s research homes in on how sustainability is approached by businesses and start-ups – in particular those that weave these practices into the fabric of their mission, rather than those that bolt them on.

“What I see in smaller companies is that they are set up to change things. That's what’s really interesting about studying them. They have a really different vision for sustainability,” she explained.
Making a difference is at the heart of everything Eva does and she believes her academic career gave her the opportunity to pursue her ambitions.
“Education is a great key to freedom,” she said. “If you have an education from The University of Manchester, you get much more freedom to do what you want. I think it’s important that students realise that a degree from our university can give them more options.”
There is something of the entrepreneur in all researchers, she added.
“As an academic or researcher you have to manage your own business and maybe that’s more natural for some than others.”
