Humanities PGR Placement Scheme

We support you with funding, professional training and one-to-one coaching to develop collaborative projects with non-University partners in the public, private and third sectors.

Applications are open to the Humanities Placement scheme for the 2022-23 academic year. 

The scheme offers awards and coaching support to PhD researchers in the Faculty of Humanities to collaborate with external partners on a variety of Knowledge Exchange projects, either in person, or in remote or hybrid delivery mode. 

Researchers can design their own collaborative project through the Researcher-led strand or apply to one of the placement opportunities available and receive a monetary award of up to £3000 per project, as well as coaching from ideation to completion. 

In addition, the annual PGR Knowledge Exchange Award celebrates excellence and best practice through an additional money prize (£1,000) and a special publicity feature on University-wide news channels. 

Previous funded projects are varied and built on the interests of the researchers involved, for example:

  • The Arts after Brexit by Charlotte Faucher (SALC), in collaboration with Tom Fleming Consulting firm, exploring the effects of Brexit on the UK cultural and creative sector. Also featured in the Guardian
  • Jaime Garcia's (SoSS) project with LGBT Foundationexploring the challenges and opportunities of online delivery of sexual health services, which included a final research report on the Digital Futures of LGBT Sexual Health published and adopted by LGBT Foundation. 
  • The Envirolution Revolution project, by a team of researchers from SALC, SEED and SoSS, in collaboration with social enterprise Envirolution, which explored the role of community engagement festivals in raising awareness on Climate Change, with a journal article and a book chapter disseminating its findings. 
  • A policy-focused project by Martin Thompson (SALC) at The National Archives, as part of the ESRC Policy Internship scheme, that explored how the archive sector contributes to efforts to combat ongoing crises in health and wellbeing, which included community engagement and policy papers on the application of the ‘Five Ways of Wellbeing'.

How to apply

The scheme is open to postgraduate researchers in the Faculty of Humanities currently registered for a PhD programme. Please read the Guidance document carefully for full details on the scheme and advice on how to design a placement, including project management and collaborative factors to consider. 

The Researcher-Led strand of the scheme allows you to design your own placement project with a partner of your choice: there are various deadlines throughout the academic year to apply by. We offer you support during all the stages of the application and project development (You can contact your PGR Placements and Partnerships Officer - see contact details in the Guidance document). We advise to submit the online UOM HUM PGR Placement Application Form 2 to 3 months in advance of the desired placement start date. 

There are also other opportunities offered by some of our partners and external schemes, with specific deadlines advertised in relation to each opportunity. External schemes (e.g. the Cabinet Office Placement scheme) require you to apply directly to them and in this case, we encourage you to ask for support in submitting the external application to maximise you success chances. If you are successful in securing a place, you can then also apply for funding under the Humanities Placement scheme, by completing the online PGR Placement Application Form as soon as possible upon receipt of confirmation from the external scheme. 

Financial support

For AHRC or ESRC funded postgraduates, financial support is available through the NWCDTP and the NWSSDTP Placement schemes, which should be the first port of call since specific rules and processes will apply. 

For postgraduates who are not funded by the AHRC or the ESRC, the Faculty offers individual Awards of up to £3,000 per researcher per project.

Coaching from design to completion

The PGR Placements and Partnerships Officer offers structured support for the whole lifecycle of the placement project, from application to completion, to all PGR researchers in hte Faculty who apply or are looking to apply to the Humanities Placement scheme or other National and International schemes.

Coaching sessions (online) will help you identify the non-academic impact potential of your research and offer you practical, personalised advice and feedback to get you started with collaborative projects that engage with non-University partners. 

You can register your place online (you will be asked to attach a pre-session activity).  

Promoting your KE activities

All placement holders based in the Faculty (including NWSSDTP and NWCDTP funded PGRs) have access to personalised support in developing a communication plan and disseminating their Knowledge Exchange activity via our Faculty website and related news outlets.

You can complete a Case Study Report on completion of your project and send it to the PPO (contact details in the Guidance document) who will be able to advise on the best engagement communication for your specific project and support your dissemination through relevant media channels.

Rewarding Excellence in PGR KE

Starting from the 2021-22 academic year, all Humanities PGRs who have completed a placement as part of the Humanities Placement scheme or any other KE initiative, internal or external to The University of Manchester, can submit an entry to be considered for the PGR Knowledge Exchange Awardwhich once a year celebrates innovation and impact of Humanities and Social Science research outside academia through a money prize (£1,000) and promotion campaign through University-wide media channels.
