Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies
Spanish and Portuguese aren’t just languages - they’re gateways to vibrant cultures, dynamic histories and globally influential societies. From the Iberian Peninsula to Latin America, our department brings together expertise that spans centuries and continents.
Spanish is spoken by over 500 million people worldwide and plays a key role in global affairs - from the booming Hispanic market in the US to Spain and Mexico’s position among the world’s top economies. Similarly, Portuguese opens doors to Brazil, a cultural powerhouse and one of the world’s major emerging economies.
Our teaching covers everything from Early Modern Spain to contemporary Latin America. We also have a wealth of expertise on Brazil and Portugal. You’ll explore literature, film, politics, art, history, and identity through a truly interdisciplinary lens.
Language learning here is immersive and innovative, supported by multimedia resources and e-learning tools. You’ll also spend up to a year abroad as part of your degree, with opportunities to study at top universities in the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America, including places like Madrid, Seville, Barcelona, Buenos Aires or São Paulo, among many others.
Graduates with degrees in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies go on to careers in multiple sectors, including education, international business, marketing, law, journalism, the civil service, non-governmental organisations, and academia - with many securing funding for PhDs in the UK and beyond.
