Why did you originally choose to study your course at The University of Manchester?

It was the best art history course in the country.

How did your degree help prepare you for your current role? 

It gave me the full art historical background I needed to become a national art critic.

What has your career path looked like since graduation?

I was the art critic of The Guardian (1977-1989); Head of Art at Channel 4(1989-1906); Art critic of The Sunday Times (1993-today); twice voted Britain’s ‘Critic of the Year’; made 50 films on art.

What are the next steps for your career? What do you hope to accomplish in the future?

I want to make many more films and keep being the art critic of the Sunday Times.

Take any job you can. And work your way up.
