Postgraduate research
Our postgraduate researchers challenge convention and explore interdisciplinary boundaries as they develop their original contribution to scholarship. They work in a friendly and lively research environment supported by superb facilities and wide-ranging staff expertise.
Our community of doctoral students comprises around 50 students from all over the world. Supervisory teams may include co-supervisors from other parts of the university or from professional organisations with whom we partner for collaborative PhD projects.

Programmes
Our research interests and specialisms fall into five main areas:
- Instrumental and vocal composition;
- electroacoustic composition and interactive media;m
- musicology (including popular music studies);
- ethnomusicology;
- performance studies (including jazz studies).
Please note that we do not offer a PhD in practical performance.
