The Worker at the Focus of the Just Transition in North Macedonia

There is no just energy transition without abandoning the extraction and use of fossil fuels, nor without the active participation and care for the communities socially and economically dependent on those energy sources. For employees in these industries, it is most important to make decisions that will enable them not only to continue their existence, but also to maintain their social practices. This was the focus of the workshop "The Worker at the Focus of the Just Transition in Macedonia" that took place in Bitola on June 20, 2025, organized by MKC Bitola in cooperation with the Local Socio-economic council of the Municipality of Bitola (LESC), Eko-svest and the University of Manchester through the GENERATE project. At the workshop, representatives from the Municipality, REK, businesses, businesses and CSOs, pointed out that adequate and timely information, active participation in all processes involving workers in Bitola, their own communities and communities from key energy regions is one of the most important elements of the just transition processes.

Priorities for accelerating solar energy expansion in North Macedonia while tackling gender inequalities

In March 2025, our GENERATE project team from the University of Manchester visited North Macedonia, one of the case study areas involved in the project. GENERATE (Gender and Precarity at the Energy Frontier) is a European Research Council Consolidator grant, supported by the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) via the Horizon Europe guarantee scheme that investigates the intersectional inequalities that drive energy-related injustices and the struggles linked to green energy transitions in the Western Balkans.
