Sonia Singh-Lunj

I chose to study at University of Manchester because of its strong academic reputation, diverse community, and focus on real-world, career-oriented learning.

What does your job involve?

As a Delivery Manager, I am accountable for the end-to-end delivery of complex, high-risk digital products and services, acting as the main point of escalation. I lead multiple teams, remove blockers, foster agile practices, and mentor senior delivery managers to ensure high-quality, strategic outcomes

How did your degree help prepare you for your current role?

My degree in Theology, Philosophy and Ethics equipped me with strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to understand multiple perspectives. Combined with exposure to a wide range of sectors and industries during my time at university, this has enabled me to effectively manage stakeholders and deliver complex programmes across diverse environments.

What has your career path looked like since graduation?

Since graduating, I’ve had several incredible opportunities to work in central government, delivering high-priority projects. My time at the Cabinet Office exposed me to a fast-paced and highly rewarding environment, which reinforced my drive to continuously develop both professionally and personally.

Moving into technology marked a significant pivot from my degree and initial aspirations, but it has enabled me to build a diverse career, working across government as well as in the private sector as a consultant, and gaining experience in a variety of industries and delivery contexts.

What are your personal highlights from your time studying with us?

During my time at the University of Manchester, I was fortunate to secure a place on the Global Graduates programme in my first year. This gave me the opportunity to travel to Toronto, where I met with alumni and gained insight into a wide range of sectors and industries.

This experience had a greater impact on my university journey than I initially anticipated. It significantly boosted my confidence and encouraged me to think more strategically about my future career.

What are the next steps for your career? What do you hope to accomplish in the future?

I hope to continue developing in my career as a delivery manager and gaining exposure to various sectors. Every project is different, so having the opportunity to deliver complex digital products or solutions that improve people’s lives is what I want to continue working on.

Do you have any advice for current/aspiring students?

Make the most of your time at university - get involved in as much as you can, both academically and socially. The time goes by quickly, so make sure you enjoy it and take every opportunity that comes your way. Be open to exploring sectors and industries you may not have previously considered, you never know where it might lead!
