Prof Fiona Smyth
Deputy Dean and Vice-Dean for Teaching, Learning and Students.
Fiona is a Professor of Geography in the School of Environment, Education and Development. She gained her undergraduate degree from the University of Bristol and her PhD from the University of Manchester. She was Head of Geography (2008-11) and Director of Teaching and Learning for SEED (2011-14) prior to becoming Vice-Dean for Teaching, Learning and Students in the Faculty of Humanities in 2014.
In 2017, Fiona was appointed as Deputy Dean of the Faculty. Fiona has sponsored a number of Faculty and University projects including the Faculty of Humanities Size and Shape project that saw the Faculty generate approximately £40 million additional contribution through growth in fee income. At University level, Fiona is a member of Teaching and Learning Subcommittee of UE, a board member for the Flexible Learning programme, the Student Experience Programme (SEP), and the residences project. She is a member of Senate and elected member of the Board. Outside the University, she is also on the governing body of Manchester High School for Girls.
Fiona is a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Editor of Geography Review, and was previously a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Geography in Higher Education.
