Sustainability
Sustainability is a key focus in the Faculty of Humanities, shaping how we understand and respond to environmental challenges.
The Faculty of Humanities plays an important role in advancing understanding of these challenges and contributing to a more sustainable future.
Sustainability means thinking about the environmental, social and economic impact of what we do and how this supports long-term change. This is important because global challenges affect communities, environments and future generations.
Our research and teaching explores issues such as climate change, environmental justice and global development, helping to inform policy, practice and public debate. Alongside this, we consider how our own practices contribute to long-term sustainability.
Our work
Sustainability is reflected in both what we study and how we operate. Our work explores the social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainability.
This includes research, learning and collaboration that contribute to new ways of understanding and addressing global challenges. We also work with external partners to apply this knowledge in practice and support wider societal change.
Areas of focus
Our sustainability work spans a range of themes and disciplines including:
- climate change and society;
- environmental justice;
- sustainable development;
- urban sustainability;
- and global inequalities and environmental impact.
Learning and teaching
Sustainability is embedded in our curriculum, giving students the opportunity to engage with complex global challenges as part of their studies.
Through this, students develop the knowledge and critical understanding needed to respond to to environmental issues in a range of different settings.
Our approach
We recognise that sustainability is not only about what we study, but also how we operate.
This includes considering our use of resources, travel and day-to-day practices, and identifying ways to reduce our environmental impact while supporting long-term change.
Our impact
This work contributes to solutions that support a more sustainable future.
By connecting research, learning and external partnerships, we help inform policy, shape public debate and support action at local, national and global levels.
This work aligns with the University of Manchester’s wider commitment to social responsibility, bringing together environmental sustainability, social impact and civic engagement.
