If you are not eligible to be considered for postgraduate research funding or have been unsuccessful in securing funding from the Faculty of Humanities, a range of alternative funding options may still be available to support your studies.
External funding
Many students begin their research study with us, having sourced funding externally. These awards may include support from research councils, industry partners, charitable organisations, or government-funded programmes.
A few examples of previous funding providers include:
- Commonwealth PhD Scholarships (High Income Countries)
- Commonwealth PhD Scholarships (Least developed countries and fragile states)
- Trudeau Doctoral Scholarships
- RADMA Doctoral Studies funding
Please look at the individual funding providers' websites for the latest information and deadlines. Most funding schemes are highly competitive with deadlines well in advance of the start date.
You may wish to continue your search online or speak with your supervisor to explore external funding opportunities.
The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding
The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding is a valuable resource that helps you identify funding from UK-based charities, trusts, and foundations. It also provides guidance on how to approach and apply to these organisations successfully.
Postgraduate loan
If you’re a UK or Irish applicant, you may be eligible for a postgraduate loan to help cover part of your research costs. This non-means-tested loan is paid directly to you and is repayable once your income exceeds the repayment threshold.
Self-funding
You may want to consider self-funding your postgraduate research, particularly if you are looking at studying part-time. If so, be sure to review the tuition fees associated with your project and ensure you have sufficient funds to support your living expenses for the full duration of your research.
