Funding description
This funding is available to an international student undertaking study in the theological understanding of the church’s mission, broadly understood.
The research areas supported by the Lincoln Theological Institute are the theological study of religion and society and theological research into a variety of ethical, pastoral, social and ecclesial issues. The successful candidate will be supervised by Prof Peter Scott, Director of the Lincoln Theological Institute.

Academic requirements
Any prospective international student with:
- Bachelor's (Honours) degree at 2:1 or above (or overseas equivalent); and
- Master's degree in Religions and Theology or a relevant subject – with an overall average of 65% or above, a minimum mark of 65% in your dissertation and no mark below 55% (or overseas equivalent)
- Any strong, relevant work experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Stage 1:
You must submit your online application for a place on the PhD Religions and Theology programme by (date tba).
Stage 2:
You must also submit the below documents via directly via email to Professor Peter Scott, Director, Lincoln Theological Institute (peter.scott@manchester.ac.uk) by 5pm GMT on (date tba):
- an up-to-date CV;
- a brief statement (maximum 500 words) setting out how the research meets the aims of the Studentship (see above under Specified Use) and the research interests of the Lincoln Theological Institute.
This award will cover:
- Fees (home or overseas) for 3.5 years.
- Annual maintenance stipend (this was £20,780 p/a 2025/26).
This award does not cover:
- Any costs incurred through a visa application (including the immigration health surcharge).
- Any costs incurred through travel or relocation.
Offers of funding are not deferrable. If you cannot start your programme by the date mentioned in your studentship offer letter, the award will be withdrawn. You are permitted to re-apply in future.
