The Faculty of Humanities is committed to supporting talented postgraduate researchers who demonstrate PhD potential but have not yet completed master’s study.
We currently offer 1+3 and 1+4 funding options that provide an opportunity to undertake a master’s degree directly followed by a PhD — all as part of a fully funded, integrated programme.
What are the benefits of master’s and PhD study together?
- Gain robust research training and methodological grounding
- Develop a clearer, stronger PhD proposal during your Master's year
- Benefit from integrated academic supervision from the outset
Alliance Manchester Business School 1+4 Home Studentship
Our Alliance Manchester Business School will provide full tuition fee awards and maintenance costs for five years of study, with one year of master’s study and four years of PhD study. These awards are open to Home (UK) students only.
The award allocation is internal and successful awardees are chosen by a panel in the Alliance Manchester Business School.

ESRC North West Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (NWSSDTP) 1+3
Through our North-West Doctoral Partnership with the Economics and Social Sciences Research Council (ESRC), potential postgraduate researchers can be considered for combined master’s and PhD funding across a number of pathways. The pathways across the NWSSDTP can be found here.
Candidates will need to submit an application to an eligible PhD programme only. Your master’s degree will be chosen in discussion with your supervisor.
If you secure 1+3 funding, you will receive an offer for both the Master's and PhD programme.
