Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
Equality, diversity and inclusion shape how we support our community and create an environment where everyone can succeed.
Creating an inclusive and supportive environment is central to life in the Faculty of Humanities. We are committed to building a diverse and representative community, where differences are recognised, valued and reflected in what we teach and research.
We work to address inequalities in access, participation and experience, while also exploring wider questions of identity, representation and social justice.
Our commitment shapes both our community and the knowledge we produce. This matters because creating a more inclusive environment helps ensure that everyone can contribute, succeed and feel a sense of belonging.
Our approach
Equality, diversity and inclusion is embedded in everything we do, including teaching, research, recruitment and the wider student experience.
We review our practices, listen to feedback and make changes where needed to improve access and remove barriers. This helps us create a more inclusive environment for staff and students.
Athena Swan
Our commitment to equality and inclusion is supported by our engagement with the Athena Swan Charter.
The University of Manchester holds a Silver Athena Swan Award, recognising progress in advancing gender equality and embedding inclusive practices across the institution. Athena Swan provides a structured framework for identifying barriers, supporting career development and improving representation across staff and student communities.
Within the Faculty of Humanities, schools and departments are actively engaged in ongoing self-assessment and action planning to drive continuous improvement.
What we focus on
We focus on creating a more equitable and inclusive environment by:
- improving access and participation;
- supporting progression and development;
- addressing inequalities in experience and outcomes;
- and promoting representation across staff and student communities.
Our community
We are committed to creating a Faculty where everyone feels they belong.
This means supporting a culture of collaboration, respect and understanding, where different perspectives are valued and people feel confident contributing their ideas.
