Engaging our communities

We work with communities to share knowledge, build partnerships and create positive social and cultural change.

Across the Faculty of Humanities, we collaborate with communities locally, nationally and globally to connect our academic work with the world beyond the University.

Why community engagement matters

Community engagement is central to our commitment to social responsibility.

It brings real world perspectives into our research and teaching, supports mutual learning and helps create work that is relevant, inclusive and impactful. Our partnerships contribute to cultural life, inform policy and practice, and support communities across Greater Manchester and beyond.

How we engage with our communities

We work with schools, cultural organisations, charities, public sector partners and community groups through:

  • public and cultural engagement activities;
  • collaborative and community informed research;
  • student led and placement based projects;
  • and funded partnership initiatives, such as the SOSS Community Partnership Fund.

Areas of focus

Our community engagement spans a broad range of social and cultural activity, including arts, culture and creative practice; education and skills; public policy and social issues; health and wellbeing; and work with local and regional communities.

Our impact

By working in partnership, our research and teaching have impact beyond the University.

Our community engaged work contributes to culture and public understanding, informs policy and practice, strengthens communities, and creates meaningful learning opportunities for students.

Examples of our work

Our recent work includes collaborative research, student projects and public engagement initiatives developed with community and cultural partners.
