Overview
What is a Summer School?
The summer school experience includes:
- academic sessions taught by leading experts;
- opportunities to learn and apply research methodologies, which you can use in your undergraduate projects or dissertation;
- behind the scenes sessions, for example with curators at the John Rylands Library and the Manchester Museum – European Museum of the Year 2025;
- social events where students can meet Manchester students and have fun;
- access to Manchester’s historic sites, vibrant cultures, music and food. Experience first-hand why the New York Times named the city as one of their ‘top places to go’ in 2024.

2027 theme - Music Moves
About this years theme
What can music tell us about the world?
Music is everywhere. It shapes our cities, communities, politics, technology and cultures.
Join The University of Manchester for Music Moves, an international summer school exploring how music shapes, and is shaped by, the world around us.
Based in one of the world’s great music cities, you’ll learn from academics across the Humanities, exploring how music transforms cities, crosses borders, creates communities, generates value and becomes a powerful expression of identity and social change.
And you won’t just be sitting in a classroom.
You’ll experience Manchester’s music, culture and creative spaces through interactive sessions and activities across the city. Along the way, you’ll develop your research and critical-thinking skills, meet students from around the world and experience university life in Manchester.
Follow the music and find new perspectives.
Music Moves is an opportunity to:
- Explore music from new academic perspectives
- Discover new ways to understand culture and society
- Develop valuable research and critical-thinking skills
- Experience Manchester and its musical identity
- Meet students from different countries and backgrounds
- Learn from University researchers
- Build an international network
You don’t need to study music. Whether your degree is in business, politics, sociology, geography, history, languages, education, media, the arts or another subject, Music Moves lets you explore your interests beyond the boundaries of your degree.
