About
The Manchester Urban Design Lab is the home of urban design research, projects, teaching and scholarship at the University of Manchester.
We combine the strengths of practical and theoretical perspectives and aim to deliver a tangible impact, shaping urban design practice and policy.
Our aim is to explore insights into urban design as a discipline and to equip students and industry practitioners with a framework to support the design and delivery of successful places.
Our teaching and scholarship promotes an applied, studio-led approach focused on practical design skills, building on our strong relationships with our affiliate network.
We offer a broad range of resources, including our MUD Lab Model Building Workshop, used to deliver 3D model by staff and students in support of external projects and teaching.
The MUD Lab addresses challenges within the built environment from the strategic to the local scale through four ongoing research themes:
- Urban design process and pedagogy
- Sustainable mobility and urban design
- Design quality and governance
- Landscape, health and urban design
Our research and activities are focused around delivering real-world impact through collaboration across sectors, having delivered projects with academic partners, local government and industry collaborators.
