AMBS 1+4 Home Studentships 2026 Entry

Pursue combined master’s and PhD study in Alliance Manchester Business School

This studentship has been created to support talented UK-domiciled undergraduate students into postgraduate research through a dedicated funding route.

By offering the opportunity to undertake fully funded master’s and PhD study together (1+4), we’re helping to build an inclusive, future-focused academic community – one that contributes to the University’s vision of tackling global challenges through interdisciplinary research and education.

Key features of this studentship

  • Open to applicants from all research disciplines within Alliance Manchester Business School.
  • Full tuition fees covered for both master’s and PhD study.
  • Annual UKRI maintenance stipend (this was £20,780 p/a 2025/26).
  • Additional doctoral training support grant available during the PhD phase.

To be considered for this studentship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • be a UK-domiciled applicant who qualifies for home fee status.
  • hold - or expect to achieve - a First Class or Upper Second Class UK honours degree (or equivalent).
  • show strong potential for academic research and a meaningful contribution to your field, as well as to the thematic priorities of Alliance Manchester Business School. This might include:
    • undergraduate research projects or dissertations;
    • placements or internships;
    • contributions to articles or publications;
    • public engagement or research communication activities;
    • prizes or awards for previous work;
    • collaborations you’ve set up with external groups or organisations.

1. Choose your PhD programme in AMBS

  • PhD Accounting and Finance
  • PhD Business and Management
  • PhD Science, Technology and Innovation Policy

2. Prepare a research proposal

Guidance on preparing a research proposal can be found on the Alliance Manchester Business School website.

3. Find your supervisor

  • You can explore the collective supervisory interests of our academic staff at Alliance Manchester Business School by visiting our find a doctoral supervisor page.
  • You may also find our online find a supervisor guide helpful when identifying potential supervisors for your research

4. Complete your online application 

Complete your application for your chosen programme by the stated deadline.

Specify in the funding section of your PhD application form that you wish to be considered for the 1+4 AMBS Home Studentship.

5. Nomination of master's degree 

If successful for your formal academic offer, your lead supervisor will nominate the master's programme. Eligible candidates will be put forward to the final interview for the award with the research division coordinator. 

This award will cover:  

  • Full tuition fees for both master's and PhD study. 
  • Annual maintenance stipend at the UKRI rate for five years.
  • £1000 stipend enhancement award. 

Offers of funding are not deferrable. If you cannot start your programme by the date mentioned in your studentship offer letter, the award will be withdrawn. You are permitted to re-apply in future.

  • Application deadline: 13 March 2026
  • Receive formal offer: 30 April 2026
  • Funding interview decisions: 22 May 2026

Please note that this is a strict deadline and late or incomplete applications will not be included in the competition.
