Queer and Trans Healthcare and Creativity studentships 2026 Entry

Two fully funded studentships to support research in queer and trans healthcare and creativity.

Funding description

These PhD studentships respond to developments in queer and trans health and wellbeing needs by centring creative forms of care developed by LGBTQ+ communities in Greater Manchester. We envision the development of doctoral projects that place creativity at the heart of cross-disciplinary collaborations between those working in gender and sexuality studies and those concerned with delivering provision.

In the context of Manchester’s substantial queer and trans population, the studentships will employ creative and critical methods to produce new knowledge about LGBTQ+ health, in line with the University’s commitment to social responsibility and impactful research.

Find out further information in our application guidance.

This guidance:

  • provides a fuller explanation of what we are looking for in terms of projects,
  • how to prepare your proposal.

Our partners

We are looking for applications with the potential for a creative encounter between the doctoral student’s own research interests and those of the partner organisation. Students will maximise their research’s potential to generate improved health outcomes by designing projects that align with the aims and projects of one of our partners in Greater Manchester.

These studentships will centre meaningful collaborations with one (or exceptionally two) of the following non-HEI partners, offering students professional experience, enhancing employability, and contributing to societal impact:

  • George House Trust
  • SICK!
  • The Sunday Boys
  • LGBT Foundation
  • Factory International

Model of Doctoral Study

These PhD studentships will work on a hybrid model. They are not the standard ‘Collaborative Doctoral Awards’ (CDAs) previously administered via the AHRC. Rather, they will lead to Partnership PhDs that include:

  1. a critical thesis (50,000 - 60,000 words);
  2. a creative element (which may consist of the candidates' own writing, film, video, performance or digital practice, or consist of significant event, workshop series, or exhibition curation accompanied by a written reflection);
  3. an agreed work package with the identified partner, whose aims the overall project must be clearly engaged with in its vision, approach and practice.

Information Session

We will be hosting an online information session for potential applicants to these awards. This session will allow you to hear further and ask questions directly about the studentships to Prof Jackie Stacey and Dr Gareth Gavin.

  • Wednesday, 18 February, 12 - 1pm
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Sign up for this session

Key features of this studentship

  • Two fully funded studentships (3.5 years) open to home and international students.
  • Available for full-time and part-time study.
  • Annual stipend at the minimum UKRI rate (2025/26 rate £20,780pa).

How to be considered

Equality, diversity and inclusion

Equality, diversity and inclusion are fundamental to the success of The University of Manchester, and are at the heart of all of our activities. We know that diversity strengthens our research community, leading to enhanced research creativity, productivity and quality, and societal and economic impact.

We actively encourage applicants from diverse career paths and backgrounds and from all sections of the community, regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation and transgender status.

To be eligible, applicants are required to meet the entry requirements for their programme (PhD English and American Studies) and their project must fit within the research scope and vision outlined.

Please note this funding is not available to current PhD students.

All applications, whatever their focus, will be submitted via English, American Studies and Creative Writing (EACW), which houses the Centre for the Study of Sexuality and Culture. For the purposes of application, proposals to The University of Manchester should be directed to Professor Jackie Stacey in the PhD English and American Studies programme.

Please list Professor Jackie Stacey as the named supervisor on your application form.

Complete an online application form by the deadline.

Section 9 of the application asks for your funding intentions. Please add a funding source, and populate the fields below:
