Information about enrolment
Once you have completed the application process, there are a number of steps to take to complete your enrolment.
Current university students will already have completed IT sign-up and student registration.
However, members of the public and staff registering for a course for the first time will need to complete the steps below in order to get access to our Virtual Learning Environment (Canvas), to get a student card and to access University facilities.
An email will be sent from LEAP Office with the details needed for completing IT Sign Up and Registration.
Why do I need to do this?
IT Sign Up allows you to:
- Access Canvas, the online virtual learning system used in class and for homework, which also contains supplementary language material
- Get a University email account
- Log on to computers at the University
- Register for a student card (once student registration has also been completed)
IT Sign-up
If you have studied with us before and have already set up an account, you do not need to do IT Sign Up again. Please go straight to Student registration. However, if you have forgotten your username or/and password , you can recover it using IT Account Manager.
If you are studying with us for the first time, you will need to complete IT Sign Up.
You may need to wait 24 hours after receiving your University of Manchester ID number before you can sign up. Then, please follow the steps below:
- Go to IT Account Manager
- Click on 'Activate your IT account'
- Enter your surname, date of birth, and your University of Manchester ID number which will be emailed to you by the LEAP office once you have paid for your course
- Press 'search' and confirm your details
- Make a note of your username and create a password
If you encounter any problems with IT Sign Up, please contact the IT Helpdesk on +44 (0)161 306 5544, quoting your ID number.
Further information:
Registration is vital in order to:
- Have any record of your attendance on a language course in the University system.
- Ensure that your personal enrolment details held by the University are accurate.
- Obtain a student card for the duration of your language course.
- Access the University libraries and other facilities.
Please note: both returning students and new students must register. Please complete your student registration as soon as possible. The deadline to complete registration is the last day of the month that registration opens.
Please view our registration process and select either 'New students' or 'Returning students' if you were with us last year. Please ignore any information regarding a 'late payment charge' if you register after the deadline set by the University.
This is valid only for full-time students at the University.
Then select the 'Registration Portlet in My Manchester'. You will need to log in with your username, e.g. mfbxiskv, given to you during IT Sign Up, and your personal password.
If you are a returning student, you should use your given username and password from last year, if you have forgotten this, please visit IT Account Manager website and choose recover your IT account.
There are three options to choose from:
- Option 1: Recover using your personal email address
- Option 2: Recover using secret question and answer
- Option 3: Recover using a token.
Option 1 and 2 allow you to recover the password yourself. If this fails then you can request a recovery token for option 3 from the IT support centre. You can do this via the IT Support Centre.
If you don't see the 'Register' button in My Manchester, go to 'Tools' in the top right-hand corner, select 'Student System' from the drop-down menu, click on 'Student Centre' and then 'Register'.
Please follow the online step-by-step instructions to complete registration, which involves confirming your personal details held by the University. There are guidelines available if you need them.
If you experience any problems completing your registration, please report this through the Student Services enquiry form and the team will respond to your enquiry within 5 days.
Your student card
You are eligible for a student card for the duration of your LEAP language course (please note that staff members taking a LEAP course will not receive an additional card).
A student card will give you access to the University Language Centre library, the University libraries, the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons, PC clusters and other University facilities, as well as giving you access to many student discounts.
If you choose to take an on-campus exam as part of your course, you will need to take your University student ID card for invigilators to check during the exam.
Once you have completed student registration, you can go and collect your student card from:
- School of Arts, Languages and Culture Student Support Hub - Next to Lime café, Lower ground floor, Samuel Alexander Building, South Wing.

Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the theft or use of someone else's work without proper acknowledgment, presenting the material as if it were one's own.
Plagiarism is a serious academic offence and the consequences are severe.
Coursework, dissertations and essays submitted for assessment must be the student's own work, unless in the case of group projects a joint effort is expected and is indicated as such.
Unacknowledged direct copying from the work of another person, or the close paraphrasing of somebody else's work, is called plagiarism and is a serious offence, equated with cheating in examinations.
This applies to copying both from other students' work and from published sources such as books, reports or journal articles. Plagiarised material may originate from any source.
It is as serious to use material from the World Wide Web or from a computer-based encyclopaedia or literature archive as it is to use material from a printed source if it is not properly acknowledged.
Use of quotations or data from the work of others is entirely acceptable and is often very valuable provided that the source of the quotation or data is given.
Plagiarism is a serious offence and will always result in imposition of a penalty. Please read the University guidelines on plagiarism.
Mitigating circumstances
Credited Students
Students are responsible for submitting a request for mitigation to their 'Home School' according to the procedures and deadlines published by the School.
Students may wish to consult the Basic Guide to Mitigating Circumstances, the Student Support page on mitigating circumstances or the Students’ Union Advice Service for further advice about the process.
Students are encouraged to tell their School as soon as they are aware of any possible issues that may affect their progress or assessments.
Early submission of requests makes it easier, for example, to offer flexibility in the arrangements for assessment, if the application for mitigation is accepted.
Requests for mitigation should be submitted by a student to their Programme owning School only, even if the student is submitting a request for mitigation for a unit managed by another School.
Interruption from Studies
Please note that credited students who were enrolled on a LEAP course at the time of their interruption being approved, will not be allowed to rejoin the course when they return from interruption, without having applied again for the course.
Please see the Apply Now page for information on when the next application cycle will open.
Email leap@manchester.ac.uk or your home school if you have any questions or concerns.
Non-credited students, staff, alumni and members of the public
As assessment is both formative and optional for this group of students. Non-credited students, staff, alumni and members of the public are not eligible for mitigating circumstances.
Facilities for language learning within the Language Centre
The Language Centre Open Learning Facilities are located in the basement of the South Wing of the Samuel Alexander building.
As part of your independent learning programme, you will have to use these facilities, which include satellite television, internet, foreign language films and videos, cassettes and CDs.
You may also record directly from the video facilities. There is a recording room available for recording yourself.
For more information, access the Language Centre resources web pages. It is a good idea to read these pages frequently, as the site is updated regularly.
Support for students with disabilities
The Disability Advisory and Support Service (DASS) provides support for current and prospective students who may need additional support. Please register with the service to see what support they can provide.
Complaints
Please direct any complaints regarding administrative matters such as delays in registration, timetabling and access to the courses to leap@manchester.ac.uk.
Other academic-related complaints should be directed to the Director of LEAP Dr Sandra Torres, copying in the LEAP Team on leap@manchester.ac.uk and we will respond as quickly as possible.
If you are still not satisfied after discussion with the Director you may proceed with formal complaint procedures.
