Overview
Learn a language with LEAP
Expert-led language courses for University of Manchester students, staff and members of the public.
Whether you're discovering a new language or building on skills you already have, the Language Experience for All Programme (LEAP) offers high-quality language courses designed to help you communicate with confidence.
We offer beginner, intermediate and advanced courses in British Sign Language (BSL) and 11 spoken world languages. With a focus on developing your practical language skills and your cultural understanding, you’ll learn from experienced tutors in a welcoming and supportive environment.
Our flexible courses are open to anyone aged 18 and over, whether you're looking to complement your studies, enhance your career prospects, prepare for living or working abroad, or simply enjoy learning something new.
Why learn with LEAP?
Learning a language can open doors to new opportunities and help you connect with different people and cultures.
Our courses combine language learning with cultural understanding, helping you develop valuable communication, critical thinking and intercultural skills that can support your academic, professional and personal goals.
You can also access a range of resources and facilities to support your learning.
Depending on the language, we have courses for beginner, intermediate, and advanced learners, with opportunities to progress from beginner to intermediate, or from intermediate to advanced level.
Find the right course
Courses are available in-person (taught on campus, in Manchester), and selected courses are available online (Languages for Healthcare, Polish and Russian).
In-person courses are taught during the day, or in the evening. Courses can be for one semester (12-13 weeks) or two semesters (September to January, and February to May).
We have two specialist Language for Healthcare courses (French or Spanish) that are designed for professionals who have previously studied the language and want to develop their technical vocabulary.
Current University of Manchester students can study for academic credit (subject to approval and eligibility), or choose a non-credit course for personal or professional development.
Explore our range of language courses and find the course that's right for you.

LEAP certificates

Students taking credited language courses do not receive a LEAP certificate, as credit is awarded through their academic programme. If you require confirmation of your language level, your tutor can provide a letter confirming your achievement.
For certificate enquiries, please email salc.iag@manchester.ac.uk with the subject line "LEAP Certificate".
