Before you apply
LEAP language courses can be taken for credit, subject to:
- approval from your academic School;
- meeting the course entry requirements;
- your language level;
- course availability; and
- timetable compatibility.
Please check with your School before applying.
PhD students can't take LEAP courses for credit, as the credits don't count towards their degree. If you're a PhD student and wish to study with LEAP, you'll need to enrol as a non-credited student and pay the relevant course fee.
Please note that auditing LEAP courses isn't permitted.
Credited students can enrol on a maximum of two LEAP language courses for credit (this doesn't apply to Exchange or Erasmus students).
Students may also take an additional LEAP course as a non-credited student. However, due to the workload involved, we strongly recommend discussing this with your Programme Director or Academic Advisor before applying.
No. LEAP doesn't permit students to skip language levels unless this is identified as an approved pathway in the Course Unit Descriptor.
Enrolment and studying
Students can't self-enrol onto LEAP language courses. All enrolments are completed by the LEAP Administration Team.
Please don't contact your Home School regarding LEAP enrolment.
We expect all enrolments to be complete by Friday, 25 September 2026.
If your enrolments aren't showing by the end of the day on this date, please email leap@manchester.ac.uk.
No. LEAP doesn't allow students to defer their place to a future academic year.
Students who withdraw from a full-year course and receive a refund for Semester 2 won't be able to rejoin the course in a later year.
If they wish to study with LEAP again, they'll need to submit a new application, pay the full course fee and begin in September of the relevant academic year.
If you need to request a change to your teaching group, please contact leap@manchester.ac.uk.
Group changes are normally only approved where there's a legitimate reason, such as a timetable clash or another significant commitment.
Please continue attending your allocated group until you've received confirmation that your request has been approved.
