Art History

Understand the world through art

Art is a vital tool for interpreting the past, understanding the present and imagining the future. It helps people define, and reflect on their, place in the world.

Manchester is internationally celebrated for its vibrant artistic and cultural scene. Our Art History department is embedded in the heart of it.

Studying here, you’ll benefit from access to several world-class cultural resources, including The Whitworth Art Gallery and Manchester Museum.

What our students say

Verity Burton, BA History of Art

"I chose Manchester because there’s so much going on. We’ve had seminars in the Whitworth Art Gallery and in The John Rylands Library. We’ve also been behind the scenes at Manchester Art Gallery.

Outside that, I’ve been to some great exhibitions outside of uni. Manchester has so many amazing things!"

#

Poppy Oxberry, BA Film Studies and History of Art

"This degree combination perfectly brought together both of my two interests. My favourite course unit has been ‘European Art History Fieldtrip’.

We were lucky enough to go to Amsterdam for 5 days. We did a presentation about a chosen piece of art, in front of the artwork itself. You learn to present, and it gives you confidence for public speaking as well."
